DSPC (1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) is a phospholtidylcholine with alkyl chain containing 18 carbons. As a a zwitterionic phospholipid, DSPC has been used in the preparation of liposomes for transfection and drug delivery applications. The functions of DSPC are to enhance the encapsulation efficiency and liposome stability which enables greater efficiency in bioprocessing. DSPC has relatively low cytotoxicity and high transfection efficacy. As a valuable component in forming lipid nanoparticles, DSPC has gained more attention in the realm of mRNA vaccines. Lipid nanoparticles enable mRNA to be reach target cells safely and effectively, hence the therapeutic effects can be achieved. Apart from that, DSPC can also be used in the preparation of microbubble monolayer for biomolecule delivery studies into protoplasts, the preparation of liposomes for immobilization studies and the generation of porphyrin-phospholipid liposomes for irinotecan and doxorubicin delivery.
