1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC)

DPPC (1,2-Dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine), an amphipathic phosphocholine with two palmitic acids on its head-group, is used for gene and drug delivery formulations. Due to its excellent biodegradability, drug encapsulation capacity and the high cellular uptake when combined with other lipids, DPPC has become an ideal option for liposomal formulations. As a component of pulmonary surfactants, DPPC can reduce surface tension and is often used in studying bilayers found in human bodies. In addition, the lipid bilayer generation can be achieved by the combination of DOPC and DPPC. Furthermore, DPPC can be used alone or in combination with other phospholipid for effective drug encapsulation and delivery. Currently, DPPC has been applied to the preparation of thymoquinone liposomes, gold nanorods, calcium chloride encapsulated liposomes and bilayers for biophysical studies.
